As the summer sun shines brighter, many of us enjoy the warmth — but for older people, hot weather can sometimes be more challenging. Rising temperatures increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and discomfort, making it especially important to take extra care during heatwaves.
At Haverhill Community Care, we’re committed to supporting our service users with practical, simple ways to stay safe and cool.
Why Staying Cool Matters
As we age, our bodies don’t always regulate temperature as efficiently, meaning older adults can overheat more quickly. Common risks include:
- Dehydration – not drinking enough can affect energy, concentration, and wellbeing.
- Heat exhaustion – symptoms include dizziness, headaches, tiredness, and nausea.
- Increased vulnerability – for people living with long-term conditions, high temperatures can make day-to-day life more difficult.
Top Tips to Keep Cool and Comfortable
Here are some simple steps carers, families, and neighbours can take to support older people during hot days:
- Encourage Regular Drinks
Offer water, diluted juice, or herbal teas. Small, frequent sips are often easier than large drinks.
Our team has also been making and delivering jelly to service users — a fun, tasty way to boost hydration that’s especially helpful for those who find it difficult to drink enough fluids. - Keep Homes Cool
- Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day.
- Open windows in the evening to let in cooler air.
- Use a fan if available, but avoid placing it directly in front of someone for long periods.
- Wear Light Clothing
Breathable, loose-fitting fabrics like cotton are best. its helpful to avoid heavy or dark clothing. - Plan Activities Wisely
- Try to keep outings or appointments to cooler times of day.
- Encourage rest during peak heat (usually between 11am–3pm).
- Cool Snacks and Treats
Fresh fruit, chilled jelly pots, or ice lollies not only help with hydration but can also make keeping cool enjoyable. Our recent jelly deliveries were a big hit with many of our service users, who enjoyed both the taste and the extra hydration.
How We’re Supporting Our Community
This summer, our carers have been busy making and delivering colourful jelly pots to our service users. Not only does this add a refreshing treat to their day, but it’s also a practical way to encourage hydration.
It’s often the small gestures — a cool snack, a friendly check-in, a reminder to drink water — that make the biggest difference in hot weather.
Keeping cool in the heat is all about prevention, awareness, and community care. Whether it’s offering a glass of water, closing the curtains, or sharing a chilled jelly pot, together we can help keep Haverhill’s older community safe, comfortable, and cared for during the summer months.
💧 Stay cool, stay safe, and don’t forget to check in on neighbours and loved ones!
